January 22, 2003 | Board Room Shriver Hall | 3:00 p.m. The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Dean Daniel Weiss. In addition to Dean Weiss, those attending were, Dean Ilene Busch-Vishniac, Vice Dean Adam Falk, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Ball, Gregory Chirikjian, Benjamin Hobbs, M. Ali Khan, Sharon Kingsland, Eaton Lattman, Daniel Naiman, David Nirenberg, Douglas Poland, Wilson Rugh and Michael Williams. President William Brody, Provost Steven Knapp, Vice Provost for Research Theodore Poehler, and Professors Betsy Bryan, and Douglas Poland were absent. Dean Weiss welcomed Professor Ali Khan and welcomed back Professor Sharon Kingsland. Approval of minutes. The minutes for the meetings of October 16, November 6, and November 20, 2002 were approved as amended. Remarks by the Secretary. Professor Kingsland reminded Council members of the evening meeting on Tuesday, February 11 and asked for discussion topics. Professor Lattman, chair of the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee reported that the following appointments were approved: 1) Hilary-Anne Hallett as Lecturer in History for 1/1/03-6/30/03; 2) Rachel Monroe as Lecturer in the Policy Studies Program in the Institute for Policy Studies for 1/1/03 - 6/30/03; 3) David Arons as Lecturer in the Policy Studies Program in the Institute for Policy Studies for 1/1/03 - 6/30/03; 4) Dr. John Fielder as Lecturer in MSE for 1/1/03 - 6/30/03; 5) Dr. Dimetrios Yatromanolakis as Assistant Professor in Classics effective 7/1/03; 6) Dr. Joel Andreas as Assistant Professor in Sociology effective 7/1/03; 7) Dr. John Forrester as Lecturer in the Policy Studies Program in the Institute for Policy Studies for 1/1/03 - 6/30/03. Remarks by the Chair. Dean Weiss said that Provost Knapp was in Annapolis lobbying for funds for Johns Hopkins. There is a possibility that funds based on the enrollment of students will be limited to those who are Maryland residents which would be a significant hit to the budget. Remarks by the Deans. Dean Busch-Vishniac announced that as of January 20, 2003 the Department of Chemical Engineering changed its name to the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. She added that this is a trend in chemical engineering departments. Dean Weiss reported that the Deans have received the Tenure Policy and Review Committee report and plan to talk about it on Friday, January 24. It is also planned for discussion at a Faculty Assembly meeting. After these discussions, a formal recommendation to Council and to the President will be drafted and will come to the Council for approval. The President and Provost would then take it to the Board of Trustees. Dean Weiss said that President Brody and Provost Knapp had been involved in the discussions and this is reflected in the report. The Deans said the Tenure Review Committee had met their responsibility admirably. The rest of the work would be done by the Academic Council and the Deans. The meeting adjourned at 4:35 p.m.
