Homewood Schools Academic Council Minutes

The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Provost Steven Knapp attended. In addition to Provost Knapp, those attending were, Dean Ilene Busch-Vishniac, Dean Daniel Weiss, Vice Dean Adam Falk, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, Professors Gregory Chirikjian, Benjamin Hobbs, M. Ali Khan, Sharon Kingsland, Eaton Lattman, Daniel Naiman, David Nirenberg, Douglas Poland, Wilson Rugh and Michael Williams. President William Brody attended the meeting from 3:15 p.m. to 4:10 p.m. Vice Provost for Research Theodore Poehler, Professors Gregory Ball, Betsy Bryan, and Charles Meneveau were absent.

Remarks by the Secretary. Professor Kingsland reminded Council members of the lunches with the junior faculty scheduled for Tuesday, February 11, Thursday, February 13 and Friday, February 14 at noon in the Jarrett Room at the Hopkins Club.

Professor Kingsland also reminded Council members of the evening meeting scheduled for Tuesday, February 11. Evaluation of teaching is the topic for discussion.

Open Discussion. Professor Lattman asked the Provost to comment on the article in The Sun about the Sellinger aid. The Provost said that since then they have met with the editorial board and pointed out that this is not a financial aid program, this is aid to the institutions. It is very early in the legislative season to know how this will come out.

The promotion of Dr. A. Hope Jahren to the rank of Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences effective July 1, 2003 was approved.

The promotion of Dr. Serena Ng to the rank of Professor in the Department of Economics effective July 1, 2003 was approved.

Professor Lattman, Chair of the Appointments and Promotions subcommittee reported that the following appointments were approved: 1) Steve Kremer as Lecturer in the Professional Communication Program for 1/27/03 - 5/2/03; 2) Dr. Thomas Haller as Lecturer in the Professional Communication Program for 1/27/03 - 5/2/03.

Remarks by the Chair. Provost Knapp announced that the next meeting of the Faculty Assembly would be on Thursday, March 20 at 3:30 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the Tenure Policy and Review Committee report.

Remarks by the Deans. Dean Busch-Vishniac made no remarks.

Dean Weiss reported that the Kreiger School of Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee voted to support a proposal allowing departments to double count courses that are for complementary majors or minors if they so choose. This is already the policy in The Whiting School of Engineering.

The meeting adjourned at 5:05 p.m.
