The meeting of the Academic Council was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Dean Daniel Weiss. In addition to Dean Weiss, those attending were Vice Provost for Research Theodore Poehler, Dean Ilene Busch-Vishniac, Professors Gregory Ball, Betsy Bryan, Gregory Chirikjian, M. Ali Khan, Sharon Kingsland, Eaton Lattman, Douglas Poland, and Michael Williams. President William Brody, Provost Steven Knapp, Vice Dean Adam Falk, Associate Dean Andrew Douglas, and Professors Benjamin Hobbs, Daniel Naiman, David Nirenberg and Wilson Rugh were absent.

Remarks by the Secretary. Professor Kingsland made no remarks except to thank her fellow Council members. She said that it has been great working with everyone and she looks forward to missing everyone on Wednesday afternoons. Dean Weiss thanked both Professors Bryan and Kingsland for the six years each of them has served on Council. He thanked the one-year members, Professors Chirikjian and Nirenberg for serving on Council. Professor Chirikjian commented that he had found the work very informative and productive. Dean Weiss thanked Dean Busch-Vishniac on behalf of the chair and also as her colleague.

Resolution concerning Tenure Policy. The following resolution concerning the Tenure Policy was approved:

"The Academic Council supports Version II of the revised tenure policy proposed by the Tenure Policy Review Committee. The recommendation is that in the future the Krieger Schools should confer tenure at the promotion to Associate Professor, and that this promotion would normally be considered no later than the seventh year of the candidate's service at the rank of Assistant Professor.

It is understood that the support of Council for this change in policy is contingent on the successful development of an implementation plan for the transition. The Deans of the Whiting and Krieger School will develop such a plan and present it to Council in the fall. The procedures for implementation must also be approved by Council before the complete proposal is presented to the President."

Remarks by the Chair. Dean Weiss commented that the Final Report of the Commission for Undergraduate Education and the Graduate Board Annual Report were on the table.

Remarks by the Deans. Dean Busch-Vishniac said that her 5 years on Council had been eye-opening, informative, and refreshing. She commented that Council members give freely of their time and effort and think broadly about what is good for Homewood.

The Council approved the Deans' request for authorization to make non-tenure track and Assistant Professor appointments over the summer effective June 4, 2003. Dean Busch-Vishniac commented that The Whiting School will either have an interim dean or acting dean who is unnamed at this point.

The meeting adjourned at 4:16 p.m.
