Graduate Admissions Policy for Students
Affected by Hurricane Katrina |
September 6, 2005
Introduction
Graduate students affected by Hurricane Katrina and
interested in our graduate programs who are currently
enrolled at a university which is now closed (some of these
universities include Tulane University, University of New
Orleans, and Loyola of New Orleans) may apply for visiting
student status at Johns Hopkins. Dean Adam Falk of the
Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and Dean Nicholas
Jones of the Whiting School of Engineering have
requested that departments in the two
schools help these hurricane-affected students by allowing
them to take courses here at Johns Hopkins University.
Admissions Process
Affected students should
contact Anna De Cheke (516-7125 or adecheke@jhu.edu).
Affected students must submit
a paper application (not electronic) along with as much
supporting documentation (transcripts, letter of acceptance
to their home institution, resume etc.) as they have
available. If they are not able to provide a transcript,
they will be asked to provide a list of courses they have
taken, along with grades. They will also be asked to list
the coursework they would like to pursue here at Johns
Hopkins.
The application fee will be
waived.
All course expenses and
tuition will be waived.
Visiting students will not be
eligible for stipends or Johns Hopkins fellowship
support.
Students will need to provide
proof of health insurance.
The affected students will be
considered non-degree visiting (special) dtudents for the
fall semester.
Visiting students must return
to their home institution once that institution opens.
Visiting students must be
currently enrolled at another institution (some proof will
be required).
Final admission will be
contingent upon the relevant department accepting the
student as a visiting student.
If their home institution is closed for the spring
semester, hurricane-affected students will need to reapply
for admission (which will be contingent upon good academic
standing and departmental acceptance).
Housing and Transportation Support
The Graduate Representative Organization (GRO) and its
president, Chris Long, have graciously offered resources
for these students. They can be contacted at gro@jhu.edu for any
logistical assistance or through their Web site: www.jhu.edu/gro/.
