Built in 1858 on rural Charles Street Avenue in North
Baltimore and later home to Baltimore's Garrett family from
1878-1942, Evergreen has witnessed a century and a half of
history. "Ever Baltimore," a special history-focused museum
tour, highlights events of the 19th and 20th centuries
— the Civil War, industrial America and the rise of
railroads, the women's suffrage movement, the World Wars,
art patronage in the Gilded Age — through the lives
and collections of this opulent mansion's former
residents.
Special Exhibition
"Dufy: the Evergreen Collection"
Friday, Oct. 5, 2007 – Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008
Open Gallery: Saturday, October 6, noon-4 p.m.
FREE with museum admission; on view as part of regular
museum tours
Whether the scene is an Ascot horse race, the yachts of
Deauville or the countryside of the Côte D'Azur, the works
of Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) capture all the color and
excitement of the moment. Evergreen has organized an
exhibition, drawn primarily from the museum's Dufy
collection, comprising the oil and watercolor paintings
collected by Alice Warder Garrett in the 1930s, when Dufy
was at the height of his career. These works reveal the
energy with which the artist rendered his favorite subjects
— landscapes, races, regattas, and social gatherings
— and his distinctive use of color and line, learned
in part from Henri Matisse and other fellow Fauve painters.
Accompanying the exhibition is a student-curated focus show
on Alice Warder Garrett's contemporary art exhibitions,
held in 1934 at her Paris gallery.
Accompanying Programming: Including a free daytime
talk and book signing by exhibition catalogue author Cindy
Kelly; and an evening of French-themed performances.
Details about these and additional programs presented in
association with this exhibition are listed below in
chronological order.
