Johns Hopkins students make the machines, but is it art?

Students in the engineering course Robot Actuators and Sensors had a challenging assignment: Design and build robots that would on their own be capable of creating works of art.

Not only that, the machines and the resulting works of art would be judged by a panel of art judges and the public.

The event was organized by Professor Allison Okamura, who taught the course and gave the assignment, and Joan Freedman, director of the Digital Media Center.

The inspired creativity--and loss of sleep--was on full display at the Mattin Center. To get a sense of what the students came up with and how well their robots did in creating art, watch a short video of the event.
