Area Artists in the 9605 Building Atrium features six artists who all live within 15 minutes of the Johns Hopkins Montgomery County Campus and who all approach the creation of their art in a different way with a unique eye.

“With all the buzz about buying local, I thought it would be great if we could exhibit local,” said Sherill Anne Gross, exhibit curator and owner of SAGWorks, through which she creates and sells cut-paper illustrations. “People always think of large cities, like New York or D.C., when talking about the ‘art scene.’ But there’s an art scene in every city surrounding major metropolitan areas, and the community around Johns Hopkins campus in Rockville is extremely rich in talent. This exhibit allows us to share with the community some of the great artwork happening in their own backyards.”

The six artists being featured are:

  • Erin Antognoli, Halo Photographic (Germantown, MD)
Erin draws on the experiences of both documentary and fine art photography to hone her distinct style of image-making. Erin's current photographic focus is on images made using a Holga camera.
  • Jacqui Crocetta (Rockville, MD)
Visual artist Jacqui Crocetta’s recent abstract painting is a departure from years of figurative work. Her compositions, which have been described as architectural and atmospheric, reflect the influence of her graphic design background.
  • Pamela Clifford (Rockville, MD)
Pamela’s contribution to this show is from her latest series of monotypes called BIRDS. In her work, Pamela often explores themes of duality.
  • Liliane Blom (Rockville, MD)
Liliane has contributed images taken during a long Labor Day weekend at Deep Creek Lake in Maryland. She describes her technique as Digital Painting, which is based on her longstanding desire to merge painting and photography
  • Barry Schmetter (Gaithersburg, MD)
Barry works with large format cameras, antique lenses, and alternative photographic processes, including wet plate collodion and cyanotype. His work includes explorations of human memory, history, and the influence of pivotal technologies on culture.
  • Andy Cleavenger (Germantown, MD)
Andy is a commercial photographer and graphic designer who utilizes digital collage. His subject matter is predominantly autobiographical in nature and ranges from literal expressions of thought to a near stream-of-consciousness use of imagery to create visual representations of his encounters with the physical world.

Todd

The Artwork of Todd Gardner is on display in the Academic & Research Building Food for Thought Café gallery.

“I decided to play around with combining plants, animals, and robots to make some new hybrid creatures,” said Gardner, an Alexandria, Virginia-based artist. “I prepared 20 pieces, involving apes, lilacs, crows, and tattoo laden robots just to name a few. I feel that this process has allowed me to map out new territory and broaden my visual vocabulary.”
