Managing Innovation... and Getting to the Market
Saturday, June 9, 2007
9:00 a.m. – noon
What does it take to successfully manage innovation and get your product to market?
That was the question addressed by three top executives on a Saturday morning in June. More than 70 alumni, students, and guests gathered at the Montgomery County Campus to hear words of wisdom from Ed Addison, CEO, TeraDisc, and Lecturer, Whiting School of Engineering; Guy Timberlake, CEO, The American Small Business Coalition (ASBC); and Sam Lloyd, Assistant Secretary for Small Business, Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development.
Some of the day's most quotable words of wisdom included:
“Collaboration is what causes innovation to happen." -- Ed Addison
"[Government contracting] is all about relationships. Get help before you get started. You have to understand the environment, the acronyms. Find someone who’s been there to help you succeed.” -- Guy Timberlake
“My philosophy of life is to experience life, not just go through it. And I mean really experience it, which means taking calculated risks. You may stumble and fall, but you have to get back up. There will always be impediments in your way. You just have to break through them.” -- Sam Lloyd

Networking in the Biotech Sector
The Montgomery County Campus of Johns Hopkins University recently hosted a Networking in the Biotech Sector Panel Discussion & Reception. Moderated by Douglas Hough, Chair of the Business of Health program at Hopkins, panelists included:
-- Jonathan Cohen, '97, President & CEO of 20/20 GeneSystems, Inc.
-- Bryan Frank, '06, Research Associate, Institute for Genomic Research
-- Stacey Franklin '02, Vice President & Co-Founder, Biotech Primer
-- Liping Liu (current student), Head of Proteomics & Biomarker Research Unit, American Type Culture Collection

"If you are a scientist and want to become a leader, realize that only 15% of your success will be due to your science; 85% will be based on how well you work with people." - Liping Liu
Alumni Speed Networking
Move over speed dating... More than three dozen alumni participated in the campus' inaugural speed networking event during which they went one-on-one with other alumni for 1 minute, 30 seconds per round.

"Everybody who came here tonight loved it." - Alice Barrett Mack, Carey Business School

"I, and many people in the room, liked the event so much that the only regret was that we did not get to do the one-on-one with everyone." - Young-Ho Chang, Carey Business School

"My only question is, 'Why didn't you do this sooner?'" - participant
