DISCUSSION
1. Dr. Brody welcomed everyone and gave a brief
explanation of why the University initiated a Master Plan. He
then introduced Jim McGill.
2. Jim McGill stressed the need for the Master Plan to be
an open process and expressed that the goal of the plan is to
help the physical campus reflect the academic stature of the
institution. He stated that the physical plan should "reflect
the very best thinking on this campus." He then introduced Adam
Gross.
3. Adam began the presentation by explaining the process
involved in developing the plan and the schedule the process will
follow. Then he reviewed observations of the existing campus,
discussing the current state of the natural area flanking Stoney
Run, the core campus, and the urban village east of Charles
Street. Guiding principles that were developed from these
observations were presented. Adam "walked" through the concept
plan and explained how major factors such as pedestrian
circulation, vehicular circulation and service functions shaped
the plan. He then broke the plan down into the East, West, and
Central precincts and discussed in more detail proposals for each
area. The JHU Campus was compared in plan to Carnegie Mellon and
Princeton, and it was pointed out that vehicles are allowed much
further into campus at JHU than the other two institutions. Adam
concluded the presentation by inviting questions.
4. Questions were presented on these topics:
* How has "move -in" weekend been addressed?
* Hopkins Club parking garage aesthetics
* Pathway on San Martin for pedestrians and bicycles
* How have accessibility issues been addressed?
* Connectivity of the Museum to the rest of campus
* Expansion of the Library
* Security in parking structures
* Expansion of housing
* Parking for sports events
* Dining facilities are totally inadequate
5. Closing Statements:
* "This is a world class institution and we should have world
class facilities."
* "This plan should be a road map so that 25years from now we can
look back and say what a wonderful job we did."
* "We should have facilities that are equal to the human capital
of the plan."
Respectfully submitted,
