DISCUSSION
1. Adam gave a brief update on the process so far, and
walked through major changes in the plan.
2. Frustration was expressed about not having
representation from JHU Facilities attending the meetings.
3. The proper name for the "White House" is the Owen House
and if the building is to be removed, we should be sensitive to
the Owen name and it may need to be extended to a future
project.
4. There was discussion about the deck behind the Hopkins
Club and how it might obscure the nice northwestern face of the
building.
5. Concern was expressed about the closing of Wyman Park
Drive. Many thought that it was a good idea to connect the
campus to the building visually and to facilitate pedestrian
traffic back and forth, but were concerned that the closing of
the street may compromise the original intention of the Olmstead
"park drive" design. Others thought that if the traffic was not
that significant on that stretch of road, and the adjacent
streets could handle the extra capacity it should be closed.
6. The patrons of Theatre Hopkins need to be accommodated.
They are generally senior citizens and need to be able to park
near the Merrick Barn.
7. Large buses need to be able to get near Shriver Hall to
unload young children for special community coordinated
events.
8. There are few proposed future building sites that we
have identified on the concept plan. It is imperative that we
discuss options for growth east of Charles Street
9. There was discussion of whether or not the entry circle
should be opened or closed to traffic. The library would like to
see it closed to traffic to eliminate the unsightly congestion in
front of the building. On the other hand many say that it should
remain open and the circle drive should be restored as a
ceremonial entry to the campus. The address for Hopkins is 3400
Charles Street and they think that people should be able to
access the campus at that point. If the circle is to be open,
there should be some sort of an information station at that
location to guide visitors.
