DISCUSSION
The meeting began with a brief review of the Master Plan to date,
the progress of the Central Precinct Study
and the development of the East Precinct Study.
The general siting or placement of the Hodson Trust Building was
discussed and the latest site plans were
reviewed.
The opinion was expressed that the food/dining function should be
removed from or limited in Levering Hall.
The location is good, but the building is not suited for that
use.
The proposed building directly across from the interfaith center
could possibly house student services.
The redesign of Charles Street was discussed including the
treatment of the area at 34th Street and the circular
entrance into the campus and how it should be treated. The
circle would work best if it were closed to
vehicular traffic and maintained as a pedestrian path only. The
surface could be changed to a more residential
scale and material.
Many different opinions were expressed about the pedestrian
bridge across Charles Street. Many feel that it is
inappropriate, others think that because of the topography on the
western side of Charles and the possibility of a
several story University Bookstore on the Eastern side of
Charles, this would be a perfect application for a
pedestrian bridge.
There are not many options for relocating the baseball field.
The only one discussed was the possibility that the
YMCA would allow JHU to use the field on the old Memorial Stadium
site.
The proposed addition to the BMA was discussed. This addition
would locate a new entrance on the northern
corner of the building conveniently facing the JHU campus.
The possibility of bike lanes on Charles Street was discussed,
emphasizing that if there were parking lanes on
both the north and south bound lanes that changed to travel lanes
during rush hour, it would not be feasible to
incorporate bike lanes. One person suggested that the bike lanes
should run through the Stoney Run area.
The area defined by 31st Street to the South, 34th Street to the
north and St Paul to the East would be a
convenient location for JHU functions.
Respectfully submitted,
AYERS/SAINT/GROSS, INC.
