DISCUSSION

09 November 1999 The basement of Krieger houses the Archives, Materials, Technical Systems, and Restoration.

Jim Neal would like to close the circle drive off of Charles Street to traffic. The circle has become more like a parking lot. There are legitimate needs to get close to the Library, such as to drop off heavy loads of books, and elderly going to the Garrett Room.

We review several options that ASG had developed for Library expansion. The desire was expressed to keep the panoramic views to the South open. There will need to be space for a new Center for Instructional Technology.

Expansion of the Library would offer the opportunity and good idea of integrating the different I.T. functions in one space. The students love the light well reading room and could use more of the M level type space. Additional reader space is a great need. There is not a real desire for a large signature formal reading room - nooks and crannies help with noise more so than large formal rooms. ASG should do an assessment of the optimal building space, for the site to the south and the library could work from there. Space is needed for entrepreneurial pieces or functions of the Library. Space in Charles Village is conducive to these type Library functions. Office and support type functions could also be housed in Charles Village. The Wyman Park Building would also be nice.

The campus desperately needs a conference center. Good precedents for this are Emory, and UNC's Carolina Inn. Right now the campus has very awkward food and service facilities. Jim Neal thinks that this should be a priority for the campus.

Respectfully submitted,
