DISCUSSION

The meeting began with a brief review of last week's meeting with Mike Bloomberg and Wally Pinkard to discuss the Campus Plan and Open Space Implementation Cost Estimate.

There was discussion of the imminent parking deficit on campus as soon as construction begins for Space Telescope. In the long run, there will not be enough parking available on the Eastern High School site to accommodate satellite parking for the Homewood campus.

To date, there has not been any effort to discourage individuals from driving to campus. One way the University could help the parking problem is to encourage alternative transportation methods and give incentives for staff and faculty to use them.

The parking issue needs to be considered in a holistic fashion, weighing all campus-wide issues. The parking plan should be carefully orchestrated and executed. The entire campus community should be involved in the process. Bruce Hamilton will chair the parking committee.

The redesign of Charles Street was discussed. Bike lanes have been considered and if the redesign includes a parking lane that changes to a travel lane during major commute hours, bike lanes become less viable because of safety issues. The alignment of Museum Drive with 31st Street was discussed.

The coordination of the master plan with the city is very important. Who will orchestrate this? Steve Campbell and Sandy Sparks are the representatives for JHU and the surrounding community to the city on this issue.

Respectfully submitted,
AYERS/SAINT/GROSS, INC.
