Ayers/Saint/Gross

Ayers/Saint/Gross, a Baltimore firm since 1915, has a long history with Johns Hopkins. Its architects have designed 14 projects for the university, most recently the Anne M. Pinkard Building in East Baltimore that houses the School of Nursing. Projects at Homewood have included the Bloomberg Center for Physics and Astronomy. The firm, under previous names, also has to its credit two of the campus's most familiar buildings, Eisenhower Library and Shriver Hall. Today, Ayers/Saint/Gross takes on only college and university projects, and specializes in campus planning.

The firm's planning philosophy, principal Adam Gross says, is that:

the physical plan should support the university's academic mission.
the whole should be greater than the sum of the pieces.
the plan should be comprehensive, so that nothing is considered in isolation from what surrounds it.
nothing from a building down to a recycling bin is too insignificant to be well-designed.
the plan must be flexible enough that implementation can occur over time.
no one involved in the planning process the administration, the faculty, students or staff, community leaders or the architects should let creative thinking be limited by apparent constraints.

ASG's other campus plan work includes projects at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and the University of Georgia and Emory University . A Chronicle of Higher Education story about ASG's work at these campuses, the University of Virginia and elsewhere is also on-line.

Ayers/Saint/Gross is located at 1040 Hull Street, Suite 100 Baltimore, Md. 21230. The firm's phone number is (410) 347-8500, and its fax number is (410) 347-8519. Principals Adam Gross and Luanne Greene are the lead architects on the Homewood project.
