Once an international student has arrived in your department the
first order of business is to visit the Office of International
Student and Scholar or the OISSS, located at 3303 N. Charles St.
It is the task of this office to aid the students in maintaining
their visa status, acquire a social security card, obtain insurance,
and complete an I-9.
The OISSS also presents an orientation program at the beginning
of the academic year. This program introduces international student
issues to departments and academic staff.
NOTE: It is extremely important that all new international students
report directly to this office as soon as they arrive on campus.
PROCEDURES FOR ADMITTING INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE STUDENTS FALL
2002
Due to the changes in obtaining student visas from the U.S. Embassies
abroad, the admission process for new International Students will
need to be revised as follows (please disregard the international
portion of the memorandum sent by Jeanine Majewski of the Graduate
Admissions Office dated 8/23/2001):
-
All International Student acceptance letters should contain the
following statement: "NO CERTIFICATE (I-20/IAP-66) WILL BE
ISSUED WITHOUT FINANCIAL AND HEALTH CLEARANCE." After an
International Student has been accepted to your department, the
offer letter should be mailed along with the Pre-Entrance Health
Form. The international Pre-Entrance Health Form will be available
for pick-up on 2/1/2002 from the Health Center at AMR II. The
completed Pre-Entrance Health Form must be received in the Health
Center no later than 5/1/2002.
- Along
with the Pre-Entrance Health Form and the acceptance letter, we
will also need the Statement of Financial Resources to be attached
for all students that will not be receiving 100% tuition and stipend.
A copy of the Statement of Financial Resources should be added
to the admissions folder along with a copy of the offer letter,
original TOEFL score and the completed FS-1 Form. The Statement
of Financial Resources will be sent via e-mail and by campus mail,
to all administrators from this office as soon as we have received
the new tuition fee from the Board of Trustees.
- All
new International Students folders should be submitted to
the office of Graduate Admissions no later than May 1, 2002, to
assure the arrival of the International Student by August 30,
2002. Once Graduate Admissions has processed the new International
Students folders, they will be forwarded to the Office of
International Student & Scholar Services (OISSS) no later
than 5/10/2002.
- In
order to assure prompt delivery of international mail, we STRONGLY
recommend that FedEx be used for all mailing. OISSS will be happy
to forward visa documents via FedEx. We will need either the department's
FedEx account or the student's credit card number, and expiration
date
