The purpose of a service center is to control the cost of providing internal services or products within the University and to provide support for the charges for these services or products to sponsored accounts. A department may provide services or products for itself or for other University departments. Service centers are established when management determines a service or product is most effectively provided within the University, although the same service may be available commercially.

The threshold of activity for maintaining a service center is $100,000 in estimated annual direct costs or revenue.
