Postdoctoral fellows are generally research appointments and are not considered "faculty" or "staff," but students. Postdocs are recent PhD recipients who are not yet expert in their field of study. They spend time working under the tutelage of a particular faculty member, or for a specific research project, in order to gain experience and expertise to eventually qualify for an academic appointment. In most research fields, the period of training should not extend beyond four years. Postdocs are usually supported by research funding; the amount of funding is determined by experience and field of research, as well as the resources available from the funding agency.

Please refer to http://www.controller.jhu.edu/tax/fellpdc_adm.htm for information regarding fellowship payments to postdoctoral fellows.

Appointments are requested by the department Chair and approved by the Dean of Research and Graduate Education, KSAS. Letters should be directed to the attention of Sonia Guggenheim, 237 Mergenthaler Hall. The following information and documents are required:

  3. Faculty/non faculty Appointment Form (PDF)
  4. Period of appointment (usually one year)
  5. Salary Amount
  6. Source of funding/budget number
  7. Social security number

International postdoctoral appointees must hold the appropriate J-1 VISA.

The Dean's Office will send out an official appointment confirmation letter. The department administrator or student academic coordinator will complete the necessary student payroll forms.
