Postdoctoral fellows are generally research appointments and are
not considered "faculty" or "staff," but students.
Postdocs are recent PhD recipients who are not yet expert in their
field of study. They spend time working under the tutelage of a
particular faculty member, or for a specific research project, in
order to gain experience and expertise to eventually qualify for
an academic appointment. In most research fields, the period of
training should not extend beyond four years. Postdocs are usually
supported by research funding; the amount of funding is determined
by experience and field of research, as well as the resources available
from the funding agency.
Please refer to http://www.controller.jhu.edu/tax/fellpdc_adm.htm
