A game approach to Commencement
Illustrator Mike McConnell's memories of his own commencement--
from the Maryland Institute, College of Art--are foggy: "It was
hot. I had black on. It was outside," he recalls. But that didn't
prevent him from creating a world rich with visual puns and
whimsical detail in Diplomaville, the uniquely Hopkins game "for
2 to 4 players." The Maryland-based McConnell, whose work has
been featured in the Washington Post and the
Washingtonian,
travels with sketchbook in hand to exotic locales around the
world; his humorous maps, menus, envelopes, and postcards capture
his experiences.
Field trip to the Brooklyn Museum
In the day he spent at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Baltimore
photographer Steve Spartana was struck by the number of
schoolchildren he spied taking tours, sketching works, and
listening to talks from curators. His aim for our cover shot: to
show how museum director Arnold Lehman (MA '66) is "bringing into
focus his vision for the museum, of integrating it with the
community." Using computer technology, Spartana melded together
two different shots--a close-up portrait of Lehman, and a crisply
focused shot of the Brooklyn skyline--to create the cover
portrait. --SD
