Ramadan

By the grace of Allah, the month of Ramadan is a very active time for the JHUMA community. Our goal is to provide facilities and activities to make observing this holy month as easy and beneficial as possible for Muslims at Hopkins.

During Ramadan, we gather in the Interfaith Center for Suhoors (breakfasts) where we serve a veriety of food including pancakes, muffins, and omelets, before praying Fajr (morning prayer) together. In previous years, our Iftars (dinners) have usually had attendance of 60-80 people and Alhamdulillah, we've been able to offer full course dinners prepared or catered by students, parents, and JHUMA affiliates - last year we had a complete Halal meal for the Muslim community every evening during Ramadan. These daily meals bring the comforts of home to campus, providing both delicious food and a family environment.

If you or your family would like to host an Iftar check out our Calendar for open dates and our how to sponsor an Iftar page for some quick pointers. Also check out the Ramadan cleanup and setup calendars for suhoor and iftar.

Our other plans for Ramadan include:

    • Daily Taraweeh (night prayers) on campus
    • Holding the annual Fast-A-Thon, where we invite our non-Muslim friends to fast with us for a day to raise money for charity
    • Educational initiatives such as a co-sponsored dinner with other faith groups
    • Eid-ul-Fitr celebration

Insha'Allah (God-willing), we intend to continue all these programs, but they require substantial finances. As such, we have submitted numerous proposals to various organizations both on and off campus. Unfortunately, many of these sources do not provide funding for food, which limits our activities during Ramadan. Through the generosity of students, parents, alumni, and others, we hope to achieve our goals for Ramadan.

If you would like to make a donation, please send a check made payable to "JHU Muslim Association" mailed to this address. Jazakallah khair (May Allah grant you goodness) for your consideration.
