Alhumdulillah, ISB has announced that Eid is on Sunday September 20!!!

JHUMA has a lovely Eid itinerary. Here are the details:

1) Eid Prayer at ISB
We'll be meeting at the IFC at 6 am to pray Fajr and then going to Masjid-al-Rahmah. Anybody who has a car, please bring your car to the IFC to help transport people.

2) Breakfast at IHOP
Insha Allah one van will be heading back to JHU after Eid prayer for anybody who needs to get back. The other van will be heading to IHOP!

3) Lovely Eid Dinner
Insha Allah we will be having a lovely dinner from O's Place at 6 pm at the IFC. Please do come out and enjoy the good food and company!

Ramadhan

Speaker: DR. SHERMAN JACKSON

Sherman Jackson is the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Near Eastern Studies, Visiting Professor of Law and Professor of Afro-American Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to numerous articles, he is author of Islamic Law and the State: The Constitutional Jurisprudence of Shihāb al-Dīn al-Qarāfī (E.J. Brill, 1996), On the Boundaries of Theological Tolerance in Islam: Abū Hāmid al-Ghazālī’s Faysal al-Tafriqa (Oxford, 2002) and, most recently, Islam and the Black American: Looking Towards the Third Resurrection (Oxford, 2005). He is co-founder of the American Learning Institute for Muslims (ALIM), a former member of the Fiqh Council of North America, past president of the Sharī‘ah Scholars’ Association of North America (SSANA), and is listed by Religion Newswriters Foundation's ReligionLink as among the top ten experts on Islam in America.

Entertainment: NATIVE DEEN

Native Deen is an internationally renowned hip-hop, R & B, and Islamic Nasheeds band. The trio consists of Joshua Salaam, Naeem Muhammad, and Abdul-Malik Ahmad. Over the years, their music has inspired countless young people to hold onto their faith amid the pressures and temptations of daily life. Together, they have played some of the world's most distinguished auditoriums and performed alongside artists such as Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens), Sami Yusuf, Zain Bhika, Raihan, Dawud Wharnsby, Seven8Six, Outlandish and much more. Their albums they have produced have been "Night of Remembrance" (2004), "Deen You Know" (2005), and "Not Afraid to Stand Alone" (2007)

Fundraiser: SISTER CLARA MUHAMMAD SCHOOL

It's a local school in Baltimore with the mission of providing an Islamic education, foundation, and structure for students with which they can grow as morally conscientious, intelligent, and upright human beings, who are prepared to lead, contribute, and compete on a global level and guided by Allah (swt), through His creation, the Holy Quran, and the life example of Prophet Muhammed (pbuh).

There will also be a wonderful, catered dinner, so come hungry :) This is our biggest event guys, so get excited!! Ticket prices will be $15 for students (if purchased in advance) and $20 in all other cases. In fact, tickets can be purchased through the website here.

Saafir Rabb is the director of "I Can't, We Can," which is a non-profit drug addiction rehabilitation program in Baltimore City. He will engage us in a discussion about faith-based community revitalization. Lunch will be provided! Jummah Cafes are always great, so be sure to come out!

The Muslim Mosaic: Islamic Art and Culture from Around the World (Islam Awareness Day)

 This event will be emphasizing the remarkable cultural and ethnic diversity that is found in Islam and will be relying on the support of our own general body members! Black-Muslim Converts: Parables and Perspectives (Islam Awareness Day)

 Panelists of this event will describe their personal and spiritual experiences in the moments preceding and following their conversion to Islam. The cultural realities of living as an African-American convert will also be emphasized.

Among the panelists are Darryn Naseer Jones, a Hopkins student, and Sheikh Darryl Wainwright, former Imam of Masjid-al-Haqq.

Abraham: Father of Nations (Islam Awareness Day)

 Hisham Mahmoud is currently working towards a Ph.D. in Islamic Studies at UCLA with minors in Arabic and Hebrew. He also holds an appointment at Princeton University as a Lecturer in Arabic. He has translated and edited several classical Arabic works on issues pertaining to ethics, philosophy, and jurisprudence, and is the Executive Director of the Zaytuna Curriculum Series.

Hisham will be relating the life experiences and journeys of Prophet Ibraham (as), as it is understood from the Islamic tradition, and reflecting on its lessons.

Muslims and Mass Media: Perceptions and Realities Post-9/11 (Islam Awareness Day)

 Edina Lekovic, Communications Director of the Muslim Public Affairs Council will be the speaker. She acts as a spokeswoman for the American Muslim community to media outlets, government officials, interfaith leaders, academic institutions, and community groups. She has been featured on several national news channels and her work has appeared in many leading newspapers.

The focus of her speech will be on the representations of Islam in American media and on Muslim-American political engagement.

As JHUMA is comprised of a diverse and considerate set of individuals, we anticipate respectful dialogue at the event. A pizza dinner will also be served.
