What is Intersession?

Intersession is a period of about three weeks in January set aside for voluntary activity on the part of both faculty and students to engage in unique educational opportunities that would enrich the intellectual lives of Homewood 's undergraduate students. Participation is encouraged, but not required. There are various programs including: Academic Enrichment, Personal Enrichment, Experiential Learning and Study Abroad.

When is Intersession?

Classes run from January 7 to January 25 , 2008. The dates vary depending on the courses. There is no class on January 21 in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

How much is Intersession?
-
It depends on the program. For Academic Enrichment courses, the tuition is free to all Hopkins undergraduate students registered for Fall 2007. Personal Enrichment courses have associated fees, ranging from $20 to $500, and are payable to Johns Hopkins University Student Development when you register. Experiential Learning courses are approximately $350.

Where do I register?

It depends on the program.

  • Academic Enrichment courses: All students can register online between November 26 and November 30, 2007. After these dates, you may register at the Office of the Registrar in Garland Hall.
  • Personal Enrichment courses: Registration begins on Monday, November 26. Students may register in the Student Development and Programming Office, Levering Union through, Friday, December 28, 2007.
  • Experiential Learning courses: Register for all courses/trips at the Career Center , Garland Hall 3rd Floor.

What is the Academic Enrichment component?

This component is comprised of credit-bearing courses in Arts and Sciences and Engineering Departments. The classes are taught for either one or two credits, and are graded pass/fail.

Who can take an Academic Enrichment class?
-
Only Hopkins undergraduate students who are currently enrolled for the Fall 2007 semester can register for credit-bearing Intersession courses.

Will I receive credits toward my distribution requirements for Academic Enrichment courses?

Yes, you can receive credits towards your distribution requirements. We recommend talking to your advisor.

Will I receive a grade?
-
Yes, but all courses are graded pass/fail (S/U) so they do not count toward your G.P.A.

How many credit classes can I take?
-
Students can earn up to 2 credits during intersession.

What is the Personal Enrichment component?
-
This portion of the program is coordinated by the Office of Student Development and Programming. The classes are all non-credit and focus around self development and fun! Classes are grouped into the following categories: Test Prep, Dance, Health Awareness, Personal Enhancement, Hobbies, Theater and Bus Trips (to New York and D.C.)

Who can take a Personal Enrichment course?

Students, faculty, staff and family members of faculty and staff can take these courses offered through Student Development.

What is the Experiential Learning component?
-
This portion of the program is co-sponsored by the Career Center , the Development Office and the Second Decade Society. The programs are designed to provide you with an intensive in-class experience followed by a trip allowing you to explore the career field of choice up close.

Who can take the Experiential Learning program?
-
There is a limit of 25 students per trip. In case of oversubscription, a selection process will take place. Priority will be given to juniors, then sophomores, then seniors.

Are there any Study Abroad programs during Intersession?
-
We do offer study abroad programs in Egypt, Italy, and Ecuador . Please check the website at http://www.jhu.edu/intersession/studyAbroad.htm for specific program information.

When can I return to my dorm?
-
Please contact the Housing office at 410-516-7960. Housing is available starting Sunday, January 6 after 12:00pm . The dorms are closed prior to that time and housing is not available.

Whom should I call if there is inclement weather?

Please call the University Weather Emergency Line at 410-516-7781 or 1-800-548-9004 or check the web at http://webapps.jhu.edu/emergencynotices/ for information on course cancellations/delays due to weather.

What is the holiday schedule during Intersession?
-
There is one official university holiday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. There are no classes and the campus is closed on Monday, January 21, 2008.
