One credit courses in Experiential Learning connect you to the ideas and the people that are making news in Development/Policy, PR/Media, and finance. The courses are a unique blend of academic analysis and field study, involving trips to New York City and/or Washington D.C.
Co-sponsoring the Experiential Learning courses with the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering are the Development Offices of the Krieger and the Whiting Schools, the Second Decade Society, and the Career Center .
The experiential learning courses/trips are designed to provide you with an intensive in-class experience followed by a trip allowing you to explore the career field of choice up close. EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING COURSES
Application/Registration for Experiential Learning courses/trips must be processed at the Career Center, Garland Hall 3rd Floor. Registration materials must be submitted by Noon Friday, November 20, 2009. Students will be notified of their acceptance via email on Tuesday, November 24, 2009. If students are selected for the trip a nonrefundable $100.00 deposit is needed to hold their place, due by noon pm on December 4, 2009. Financial Assistance may be available to those who qualify. If students do not meet this deadline, their space will be forfeited to a student on the waiting list. Selected Students are required to participate in a mandatory trip. This course introduces students to perspectives on globalization and the global economy as practiced by leading professionals in a range of fields. Presentations, discussions, and readings address the changing nature and importance of global trade and finance, cross-culture marketing, news media and entertainment industries, state sovereignty and national security, human rights and sustainable economic development.

This course follows the natural capitalization sequence of a company to introduce the main components of the financial services industry: private equity, commercial finance, IPO's, M&A's and leveraged buy-outs, Wall Street research, asset management, and industry ethics. Lectures on these topics will be given by alumni financial experts. The course concludes with a three-day trip to New York City, which will include visits to financial firms and an alumni networking reception. Firms may include J.P. Morgan Chase, Citi, Barclays, and BlackRock.

Note: 100% attendance expected for successful completion of the course. Engineering students can apply for the "Day on the Street" Trip without taking 180.104 Financial Literacy. Priority will be given to juniors and sophomores.
Arts & Sciences Students: Please note that Macroeconomics (180.101) is a prerequisite for this course.

Trip Amount:
$250 (check or money order made payable to "Johns Hopkins University") - includes transportation & lodging.
Trip Deposit:
$100 (nonrefundable) upon notification of acceptance into course/trip and not later than 5:00 p.m. December 4, 2009.

Once Selected:
Prompt notification and further instructions from the Career Center Office to selected students via email. Students pay their deposit and sign a Trip Release Waiver Form at the Career Center, Garland Hall 3rd Floor. Students are officially registered for the course. No Refunds will be made after Friday, December 4, 2009.
Resumes:
Students registered for all courses/ trips will submit their resume electronically to the Career Center through their Career Center Account, and must attend an up-to-date, hands-on resume workshop (held in December) that includes critiquing resumes.

Will I have to share a room?
Yes, you will have to share a room with one other person from the class. You will have the opportunity to request a same sex roommate.
What meals are covered?
Traditionally, we ask hosts to sponsor breakfast or lunch depending on the itinerary. All other meals not scheduled with a host are on your own.
What do I need to bring?
A picture ID is critical for entry into most sites.
In addition, you will want to bring the following:
- Toiletries: Deodorant and breath mints - "the days are long."
- Bring a nice notebook/portfolio, such as Hopkins leather.
- Bring about $50 or more in cash and a credit card for emergencies
