Deja vu for Blue Jays as ‘06-‘07 Season Comes to a Close

For the members of the Blue Jay squad from the ’05-’06 season, the close of this season seemed all too familiar.  Set to face off against Salisbury in Game One of the Playoffs (with Playoff Beards flowing) the Blue Jays got off to a strong start, scoring 3 goals - 2 by freshman Alex Satin and the other by freshman Matti Makela - in the first ten minutes of the period.  Salisbury would score 2 goals later in the period, making for a close game.  However, senior Captain Jeff Warren, not to be outdone by his freshman teammates, answered with a goal of his own with 1:30 remaining in the period.  This high-scoring first period would come to a close with a ripping goal from senior Peter Livadas with 13 seconds remaining, leaving the Blue Jays up 5-2.  The second period was dominated by the Blue Jays taking 13 shots on the period.  Goalies Lenny Genovese and Joe Romano would only see a combined 7 shots on goal thanks to the tough Blue Jay defense.  The defense would be cracked only once as Salisbury scored 8 minutes into the period on a Power Play.  Captain Jeff Warren would score again to make the score 6-3 going into the third period.  Ten seconds into the third period, freshman Alex Satin would earn his first JHU career hat trick scoring off a beautiful play from Warren and Makela on the Power Play.  The Blue Jays cruised to a 7-4 win and anticipated the Semifinal match against Loyola the following evening.

A Semifinal match against Loyola was not new to the majority of the Blue Jay team – in the ’05-’06 season, the Blue Jays lost to the Greyhounds.  Being the final time the 10 Blue Jay seniors would ever face-off against their great rival, the seniors vowed that this year would be different.  After a hard fought 10 minutes – including 7 penalties – the Greyhounds would score leading the Blue Jays 1-0.  Not going down without a fight, senior Peter Livadas would answer with 2 minutes left in the period, evening the score at one a piece.  Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, the goal by Livadas would be the last goal of the season.  The final 2 periods were hard fought, but the Blue Jays could not seem to find the net and Loyola would advance to the Finals defeating the Blue Jays 8-1.  “It was a rough way to end, but I hope we can carry our momentum from the second semester over to next year,”said junior defenseman Ryan McLelland, who was named the new Team President.

This Semifinal marked the last game as a Blue Jay for the 10 seniors on the squad – #1 Joe Romano, #2 Luke Kozumbo, #5 Evan Miller, #7 (A) Peter Livadas, #9 Scott Spratlen, #13 James Weisheit, #20 Dave Johnson, #29 (C) Jeff Warren, #30 Lenny Genovese, and #85 Kerim Eken.  “They were definitely a huge part of the team and its going to be tough without them,” said McLelland.  The team congratulates the seniors on their graduation and hopefully we will see them at next year’s alumni game!

Jays Head to Playoffs with 6 Game Winning Streak!

The Blue Jays took to the ice this weekend looking to continue their winning ways in a non-league game against Mount Saint Mary's and a league game against Dickinson College.

On Friday night, the team took on MSM, who was looking for revenge after the Jays handed them a 12-4 defeat the week prior. After having both practices cancelled the week prior due to a snowstorm, the Jays came out a little lethargic, going down 0-2 after the end of the second period. With a rousing talk between periods, captain #29 Jeff Warren's three point period would lead the team in the third period. Warren would score JHU's first two goals to tie up the score. #11 Alex Satin would then cap off the rally with two goals late in the third period to give the Blue Jays the win. #1 Joe Romano would stop 36 of 38 shots in the victory. Scoring for JHU: Warren (2 G, 1 A), Satin (2 G), Pete Livadas (2 A), Matti Makela (2 A), Scott Spratlen (2 A), and Taig Rajpal (1 A).

On Saturday the team hosted Dickinson College, who was enjoying a good season at 7-2 in the MDCHA. Once again things would start off slow for the Blue Jays, as they found themselves in a 0-3 hole after the first period. The second period saw the team determined not to end their winning streak, and less than four minutes in, Peter Livadas would tip in a slap shot by Christian Murphy to get the Jays started. Alex Satin followed with a goal two minutes later, followed by a Scott Spratlen goal 2 minutes after Satin's tally. Satin would hit the back of the net twice more in the second, including an incredible goal scored while spinning on his backhand and falling to the ice. The beginning of the third period saw the Jays continue their momentum, as Scott Spratlen would complete his hat trick by scoring two goals less than three minutes apart for a 7-3 lead. The team would let up a little bit and Dickinson would charge back, scoring three goals, including one with 18 seconds left in the game to bring the score to within 7-6. Goaltender Kerim Eken would hold on for the win, stopping 42 of 48 shots in the game. Scoring for the team: Satin (3 G, 1 A), Spratlen (3 G), Jeff Warren (3 A), Taig Rajpal (2 A), Peter Livadas (1 G, 1 A), and Ryan McLelland, Dave Johnson, Luke Kozumbo, Evan Miller, and Christian Murphy would all have one assist each.

The team will now take on Salisbury University in the first round of the MDCHA playoffs on February 23 at 9:30pm. The game is being held at Skate Frederick in Frederick, MD. More information on the playoffs can be found at http://www.mdchahockey.com
