The operating landfill is owned by Waste Management
of Pennsylvania and is one of the largest landfills in the country.
It has been fined previously for odor, volume limit, and waste reporting
violations.
The community of Pen Argyl is concerned about possible health effects
from an existing landfill and the further effects of a proposed 27-acre
expansion of the site. They are also interested in the fate of a
vacant industrial complex adjacent to the landfill, which is unoccupied
due to perceived contamination and is a blight for the community.

The community has requested information on possible health effects related
to living near a landfill and guidance on developing a health study.
The technical assistance team includes the Outreach Director, Program
Manager, Nurse and Engineering Consultants, and Graduate Nursing
Students. The team has attended council meetings in Pen Argyl to
determine community needs, answer community’s concerns about the
landfill and possible related health effects, and provide oversight of
the community health registry currently being conducted by the
community. The team has also participated in a community sponsored
workshop on landfill related issues and a press conference (Click here
