Meet the PEEPs

AmandaHi! My name is Amanda Mason, and I am a senior in Public Health Studies. I have always been very interested in health. I used to do research in various labs, but eventually I realized that my real passion lies in working with the community. Last Spring, I studied abroad in Tanzania and Vietnam where I lived with the locals and did research on childhood nutrition. I am very excited to be back at Hopkins, and I hope to share my knowledge and experience with all of you! In addition to being a PEEP, I am a course assistant for Oral Presentation classes, which is another job that I love! Outside of school, I love to dance, kayak, and travel as much as possible.

Arya
Hey, my name is Arya Zarinsefat and I am a senior Chemistry major. Outside of schoolwork, I do research in an Organic Synthesis Lab, enjoy going to the beach, cooking, and discovering all sorts of different cultures. I joined PEEPs because I feel that it will allow me to reach out and help individuals that may need guidance in figuring out the best way to live healthily. I am looking forward to a great year!

Ashley Hey, my name is Ashley White and I'm a junior majoring in Public Health. I'm on the women's lacrosse team and also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council. I spent this summer doing research to develop vaccines for soldiers against biological weapons. I'm constantly quoting movies, love the beach and am really looking forward working with PEEPs this year!

bharatI’m Bharat Maraj and I am a senior Public Health Studies and History of Medicine double major  that is destined for the medical field (haha, I hope).  I love everything about every sport and try to master as many as possible.  Beyond study and sports I also enjoy watching movies of any genre, writing  prose, cooking all sorts of foods, going to concerts and other music venues, and, of course, being a peer educator and mentor.  Being from Rhode Island, I also love the beach, boats, and traveling no more than 30 miles to leave the state.  My greatest fear would be living in a land-locked city or state without the ocean nearby.  The one thing I love about being in PEEPs is learning how to help others have fun while being safe  (and of course the free dinner)!

I’m majoring in Public Health and Pre-Med.  I’m also a member of Multicultural Student Volunteers (MSV), the Black Student Union (BSU), African student association (ASA), Students Educating and Empowering for Diversity (SEED), and JHU Women Basketball Club. I’m president of JHU VIVAZ Performing Arts Group. As you can see I’m driven and very energetic! I’m interested in sports, dance, and music. I have the extended vision of utilization of my undergraduate years. I’m working on finding the balance of social and academic life and taking leadership roles to create positive influence on my community at Hopkins. I’m currently a teaching assistant in 9th grade math at Johns Hopkins' Public Education Partnership Corps that works with Baltimore Civitas School.

JuliaHi! My name is Julia Lwin and I am Class of 2011 studying Public Health. This is my first year in PEEPs, but definitely not my first experience in Public Health. I love health education and learning about social interventions that improve health. I have an insatiable desire for travel. This past year I went to Ecuador and Ghana as a volunteer. My dream is to work in International Health through health promotion and social changes. I decided to join PEEPs because seeing as how I can’t travel during the semester I wanted to do my part to improve and promote health in the community I live in, Hopkins. I am very excited for this coming year. Picture: Me feeding a monkey in Ghana!

KarleneHi, my name is Karlene Graham and I’m a senior majoring in the History of Science, Medicine and Technology.  I chose that major because I’ve always been interested in examining how things used to be and how they are to see how they can change for the future.  I joined PEEPs because I want to apply that perspective to topics of nutrition and healthy living.  I’m aspiring to attend graduate school to study Nutrition as a matter of Public Health and      love that PEEPs is gives me hands-on, interactive experience with my peers.
