Program Goal

 

The role of Peer Health Educators is to bring health messages to the Homewood campus via settings such as residence halls, fraternity/sorority organizations, and other campus groups.

 

The goal of the Peer Health Education Program is to provide a setting where students can feel comfortable to openly discuss and explore various health issues. The Peer program is designed to increase student knowledge and awareness about sexual health, sexual assault, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs (ATOD), and stress management.

 

Program Objectives

 

Peer Health Educators will be able to:

 

Understand the relevant issues surrounding sexual health, sexual assault, ATOD, and stress management.

 

Identify the physical, emotional, and psychological components of the various health issues.

 

Promote awareness and knowledge concerning responsible decision- making.

 

Meet students’ needs for information and assistance through discussion groups, outreach programming, as well as one-on-one conversations.

 

Provide a student referral mechanism for all students both on-campus and off-campus.

 

Develop social marketing campaigns to increase student’s awareness on campus regarding misconceptions about certain health practices.

 

Obtain practical hands-on health education experience by working on a variety of projects through the Center for Health Education & Wellness.

Peer Health Educators Wanted

 

Gain valuable experience, earn 2 academic credits per semester, and meet new people!

 

Description of Program:  The Peer Health Education Program is designed to increase Homewood student’s awareness and knowledge about sexual health including contraceptive options, sexually transmitted infections, and women’s reproductive health; sexual assault awareness; alcohol, tobacco and other drugs; stress management and the Student Health and Wellness Center services. The program accomplishes this through educational sessions and presentations led by trained peer health educators.

 

Requirements:

 

  • One-year commitment with an average commitment of 3-5 hours each week which includes:
    • A mandatory four-day training prior to the start of the fall semester.
    • Two hours per week in the Center for Health Education & Wellness.
    • Attending a weekly group meeting for 2 hours.
  • Previous experience/course work in public health is helpful but not necessary.
  • A sincere interest in student health and a desire to become involved!
