The GX Listserv The GX list provides information you need during the "Great Excavations 2" project at the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus. Today is Monday, May 20. Today's GX includes:
1. Ready, set, go! 1. Ready, set, go! The commencement tent will still be coming down when the fences go up; GX2 will be in full swing Starting this Friday, May 24, workers will erect fences around the entire GX2 construction zone. As soon as that happens, car and truck traffic will no longer be allowed through. Traffic entering the South Gate of campus will be blocked at Barton Hall from going any farther north. Traffic coming south from the area of the Greenhouse will be blocked from entering the construction zone at the south end of Levering. Pedestrians will be able to get past the fences through Memorial Day weekend. But the gaps will close on Tuesday, May 28. That's when the heavy equipment rolls in and demolition and site preparation work starts in earnest. From then on and throughout most of the summer, pedestrians will have to take some long detours to cover some fairly short distances. See the map at www.jhu.edu/gx/info/phase2.html and check out the plan for Fence #3. Though the actual fence line is likely to differ from the drawing is some small ways, you'll see that the general idea is this: no pedestrians will be allowed in the area enclosed by (going counterclockwise) Hodson, Garland, Barton, Latrobe, Ames, Gilman, the Glass Pavilion and Levering. In other words, during construction, a quick dart from Garland across to Levering becomes a trek: out the door on the Garland Field side, around Hodson to the northwest corner of the Glass Pav, then through the building to your destination in Levering. Another example: A trip from Latrobe to Garland will require a swing around the back of Barton. Cars and trucks that once cut through this sector of campus on their way north will now be diverted to the new west-side roadway. That road runs from Wyman Park Drive behind Clark and Hodson halls. It then meets up with the existing west-side road at Levering. The connection of the new road to the existing road will open by Tuesday, after removal of a commencement-related tent from behind Clark Hall. 2. Levering to Olin The pedestrian path from Levering to Olin, which has been closed since last month for construction of the new western connecting roadway, will now be restored and is scheduled to reopen by July 19. In the meantime, continue to use the current detour route: from north of Clark Hall, walk down the stairway to San Martin Drive and from there along the sidewalk to Olin. 3. Reminder on deliveries With GX2 construction beginning, please remind your vendors of the new rules on deliveries to the affected area of campus. Those rules are posted online at www.jhu.edu/gx/info/deliver.html. 4. Subscribing and unsubscribing Please let others who may be interested know about this list.
