The GX Listserv The GX list provides information you need during the "Great Excavations 2" project and related construction projects at the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus. Today is Friday, July 12. Today's GX includes:
1. Restoring access, Part 1 1. Restoring access, Part 1 The GX2 contractor will reopen pedestrian access to the west side of Ames Hall on Monday, July 15. Starting that day, pedestrians on the southern side (that is, the lower quad side) of Ames Hall will once again be able to walk around the corner to the western face of the building. That's good news for disabled pedestrians: The western entrance to Ames provides access to the elevator that moves them between the lower and upper quads. It will take a day or two longer for crews to finish all their work in the area. So the nearby southern end of the Gilman tunnel will not reopen until Tuesday, July 16, at the earliest, and perhaps not until Wednesday, July 17. Ames-bound deliveries coming through the Gilman tunnel will have to wait a couple of extra days. 2. Restoring access, Part 2 Along with Monday's reopening of the Ames west entrance comes the completion of the sidewalk in front of Hodson Hall. By Monday, therefore, two of the routes that have been the most difficult for disabled pedestrians this summer will be reopened: first, from Clark Hall to the north via the Hodson/Garland corridor, and, second, from the lower to the upper quad via the Ames elevator. The new fence alignment around the GX2 project area, as of Monday, July 15, is now online at www.jhu.edu/gx/info/phase2.html. 3. Temporary access, Part 1 A temporary loading dock has been set up on the west side of the Johns Hopkins Club. Effective immediately, all deliveries to the club should go through that dock. 4. Temporary access, Part 2 Starting at noon today (Friday, July 12), the loading dock at Macaulay Hall is closed. It will be demolished Monday, to be replaced eventually by a dock at the new chemistry building now under construction between Mudd Hall and the Johns Hopkins Club. In the meantime, a temporary loading dock has been built behind Mudd Hall. A door bell has been installed there to allow delivery drivers to notify the receiving crew that they have arrived. 5. Safety reminder The fences around both construction areas on campus -- the GX2 site south of Gilman and the chemistry site to the north -- are there for a reason: safety. Please stay outside the construction fences. Also, remember that all non-construction vehicles must stay out of the chemistry building construction area, except for cars that have been given prior approval for disabled parking. 6.
