Where artists' visions come to life
Evergreen House provides inspiration, site for show of intriguing sculptures


Katherine Kavanaugh's student volunteers prepare her glass row houses

After a recent rain storm and caught in the glare of the mid-morning sun, Katherine Kavanaugh's cast glass row houses glisten like ice on the verge of melting. Some 40 yards away, Winifred Lutz's massive confluence of brick, glass block, trees, sod and other assorted items imperceptibly evolve, perhaps as the result of a gentle gust of wind or the landing of a bird. The sculptures at Evergreen House don't just reside there; they live and breathe on the property.

It's Keyser Quad, please, not the 'upper' one
A hallowed segment of the Homewood campus received a fitting tribute on Sunday, April 30, as the university sought to underscore a name all too often forgotten. More than 50 years since its naming, the Keyser Quadrangle was rededicated in an afternoon ceremony attended by Johns Hopkins officials and nearly 50 Keyser family members who gathered to celebrate the event and unveil two bronze William Keyser biographical plaques, recently installed on opposite ends of the quad.

Computer models help nations prepare for pandemic
Using complex computer models, a team of researchers analyzed how effective travel restrictions, school closures, drug distribution and other public health strategies would be in slowing the spread of a pandemic flu outbreak.
