A night for the Singapore Conservatory
Treated to a student musical recital that drew an impassioned ovation, Johns Hopkins President William R. Brody and a group of university administrators, Baltimore/Washington arts leaders, government officials and dignitaries from seven Asian nations gathered on Tuesday, March 4, to honor the establishment of the Singapore Conservatory of Music, a unique collaborative effort between the National University of Singapore and the Peabody Institute.
   The event, held at the Embassy of the Republic of Singapore in Washington, featured speeches by Ambassador Chan Heng Chee, the evening's hostess; President Brody; and Peabody Director Robert Sirota. Full story...

New facility set for cancer research
Just three years after dedicating a building devoted solely to cancer research, Johns Hopkins Medicine broke ground last week for a second cancer research building on the East Baltimore campus. Speakers at the groundbreaking ceremony, held on March 3, were U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes, Maryland Senate President Thomas V. "Mike" Miller, Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley and Baltimore City Council President Sheila Dixon, as well as university President William R. Brody; Raymond A. "Chip" Mason, chairman of the board of trustees of the university; Edward Miller, dean and CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine; and Martin Abeloff, director of Oncology at the School of Medicine.
   Construction of the $80 million cancer research building, known as CRB II, is expected to begin in May and be completed by May 2005. Full story...
