Homewood Makeover, Part II
Service trucks and asphalt, be gone. Hello, footpaths and foliage. Open space work at Homewood resumes this summer, when a significant tract of the southern portion of the campus will undergo a complete makeover.
   Unofficially dubbed Great Excavations II, the upcoming project is the next major phase of the transformation of Homewood into a more pedestrian-friendly and attractive environment. Full story...

President Taps Hopkins Vice Dean to Head NIH
The School of Medicine stands to lose a gifted administrator and scientist, as President Bush announced last week his intention to nominate Elias Zerhouni, the school’s executive vice dean since 1997, to head the National Institutes of Health. Bush made the announcement, which was anticipated, in an East Room ceremony at which he also introduced his choice for surgeon general, Richard Carmona, a professor of surgery at the University of Arizona. Both nominees are subject to Senate confirmation.
   Bush said that in light of the war on terrorism and recent medical advances-- in particular, the completion of the Human Genome Project-- the work of NIH has “never been more promising, and never been more important.” Full story...

Developer selected for Montgomery Campus
Johns Hopkins has taken a large step toward construction of a third building at its Montgomery County Campus, selecting a developer who also will assist in planning for additional future expansion at the 35-acre site in Rockville, Md.
    After a national search, the university selected Spaulding & Slye Colliers, a corporate and investor real estate services company with offices in Washington and Boston. In addition to developing the new building, the company will work with Hopkins to craft a master plan for future construction that would build out the Montgomery County campus. Full story...
