How do I qualify for summer assistance?
The summer 2012 session is considered part of the 2011-2012 academic year. You must be a matriculating undergraduate or graduate student in a degree program to receive aid. In order to qualify for Federal loans, you must enroll for a minimum of six (6) undergraduate credits, or two (2) graduate courses (not for audit) for the summer terms.
What type of aid is available?
There are a limited number of partial need-based summer grants available to undergraduate students who are current need-based Hopkins grant recipients. To be considered for a partial summer grant, you must submit the JHU Summer Aid Application by March 19, 2012. Notification of receipt of awards will be made by May 13.
Loans and employment opportunities - You may borrow funds through the Federal Direct Loan Program if you have not borrowed your maximum loan eligibility for the year. The maximum annual loan limits (combined subsidized and unsubsidized) in effect for the 2011-2012 academic year are: $5,500 (freshmen), $6,500 (sophomores), $7,500 (juniors/seniors), and $20,500 (Graduate/Professional Students). Federal Parent (PLUS) loans as well as other educational loans for undergraduates are also available to meet the cost for summer courses. *Note: New graduate/professional students who will be beginning their graduate program in the summer 2012 term will not be eligible to receive a subsidized loan. Your summer loan(s) will be awarded as part of the 2012-2013 year and thus will be subject to new federal regulations governing the Direct Loan Program effective July 1, 2012. Federal Work-Study (FWS) funding is available during the summer for graduate students and for undergraduates participating in Community Service. Non-FWS jobs are also available. How do I apply for summer aid?
You must submit a 2012 JHU Summer Aid Application. The deadline is March 19, 2012 for partial summer grant consideration and April 30, 2012 for all other aid (loans/work).
If you did not apply for Federal aid in the Fall or Spring semesters, you must file a 2011-2012 FAFSA no later than March 13, 2012. Additionally, you must submit a copy of your and/or your parents' 2010 federal tax returns to our office no later than March 19, 2012.
How will students be notified about aid eligibility?
