Violaine has discovered that the stakes set to define reference points for Trench A are all moving because the soil is so wet. She works with Ashley and Shaina to remeasure the square and reset the stakes. Jay’s photo from the morning shows the progress in this trench very well. Large sandstone blocks are visible across more than half the square running from the dock. Unfortunately, the pottery both here and in Trench B, is entirely unstratified but represents a mix of Late Period down to Roman period.

Sieving continues for 15 minutes each hour. Every level is sieved for that period of time through the large dry sieve. The soil is wet but goes through the large meshed sieve reasonably well. The clumps of mud are hand rubbed, and we retrieve sherds, small objects, and organics in this manner. Meredith is checking the last lumps of mud carefully.
