2013-2014 Breaking in Baltimore Alternative Break Program

The JHU Center for Social Concern wants you for the 5th annual Alternative Break Program!  If you want to have fun while making a difference in the Baltimore community and learning about pressing social issues, then Breaking in Baltimore is for you!  Each alternative break includes a mix of volunteering, documentary viewings, panel discussions, site visits, group discussions, and social activities.  All breaks take place in Baltimore to better understand and make a difference in our local community.

During the week or weekend, students are with a group of 10-12 other students (including one student coordinator and one graduate student advisor) for the duration of the week and live together at a church or youth hostel. Transportation is provided, and most meals are covered by the program. Pre-trip activities are also arranged in order for participants to get to know each other prior to the week/weekend.

Program Descriptions

Alternative Weekends:
The CSC will offer two Alternative Weekends for the 2013-2014 academic year.  These shorter break experiences will feature all of the components of a week-long break, but are designed for students who may not have room in their schedule for a week-long experience.

Cost: $40.  This trip fee will cover lodging, transportation, and some food.  Each team of students will be expected to participate in fundraising efforts to cover the cost of their fee and provide additional funds that can be donated to an agency or used toward trip activities.

Winter Intersession Trips: January 19th-25th, 2014
The Center for Social Concern will offer two trips during Intersession.  For the 2013-2014 year, the CSC is offering a trip focused on refugee issues, and will still offer a trip on HIV/AIDS issues.

Cost: $125.  This trip fee will cover lodging, transportation, and some food.  Each team of students will be expected to participate in fundraising efforts to cover the cost of their fee and provide additional funds that can be donated to an agency or used toward trip activities.

Spring Break Trips: March 15th-21st, 2014
The CSC will offer two trips during JHU’s spring break. The spring break trips served as JHU’s first venture into Alternative Breaks and the trips have become extremely popular. Spring break trips will feature one exploratory day in Washington D.C.

Cost: $125.  This trip fee will cover lodging, transportation, and some food.  Each team of students will be expected to participate in fundraising efforts to cover the cost of their fee and provide additional funds that can be donated to an agency or used toward trip activities.

This trip is coordinated in partnership with The Campus Kitchen at Johns Hopkins, a campus chapter of the national Campus Kitchens Project.
