History and Mission
Originally named the Baltimore Free University, the Village Lyceum was created in 1968 under the auspices of the Office of the Chaplain at Johns Hopkins University. After a two-decade sabbatical, it once again resumed operation in October 2003 and by 2008 was renamed to the Village Lyceum. The Village Lyceum seeks to provide free personal enrichment courses that are open to all Baltimoreans.
Typical courses include Performance Art, Yoga, Socialist Thought, Playwriting, Post-9/11 Issues, Ballroom Dance, Silk Screening, Labor Studies, Documentary Photography, Debt Management, World Poetry, etc. Course offerings vary every semester, so be sure to keep checking back with us.
