The Refugee Youth Project is an after-school program run by Baltimore City Community College in conjunction with local refugee resettlement agencies, mainly the International Rescue Committee. The Refugee Youth Project is funded by the Maryland Office of New Americans. RYP serves over 50 refugees between the ages of 6 and 21. (taken from the refugee youth project website)

Hopkins RYP provide volunteers, especially tutors to the after-school site.  The site is mainly comprised of children ages 5-13.  We help them with their homework (as English in school is a language barrier for many of them) and follow lesson plans prepared by the RYP Coordinator. 

Our goal is to help assimilate these refugee children into their new environment and provide an opportunity as a mentor and role model to these children.  

The time committment is flexible, but we highly encourage volunteers to attend tutorial once a week for 2 hours, choosing a day between Mondays through Thursdays in the afternoon.  Since the site is off campus, the commuting time takes about 20 minutes to get there and 20 minutes to return on campus. 

Other side projects include chaperoning field trips and other social events RYP may schedule for the children and volunteers.
