> Know Yourself
The first step to finding your dream job is to learn as much about
yourself as possible. This means exploring your values, skills,
interests, and personality. Whether you are seeking a job or internship,
or considering graduate or professional school, knowing more about
yourself will help you find the focus you need to be successful
in reaching your goals.
To learn what's important to you, ask yourself these questions.
- Personal Interests: What interests
you? What do you like to do when you’re not in class? What
issues are you passionate about?
- Academic Interests: Which subjects
do you enjoy most? What do you most want to learn? Would you like
to research a particular topic in depth?
- Career or Academic Goals: What do
you see yourself doing after you finish your degree at Hopkins?
Graduate school? Full-time work? A fellowship?
- Work Values: What motivates you to
do your best? What motivates you to take action? What makes you
advocate a cause or point of view?
- Skills and Characteristics: What
are your strongest skills? Which skills would you like learn?
Which ones do you want to enhance?
These questions are not always easy to answer at first glance. Many
students consult a career counselor at the Career Center when working
through them. To set up an appointment to discuss your career goals,
please contact us. In addition, the Career Center offers the following
assessment tools that may help.
Strong Interest Inventory

interests. This assessment requires interpretation by a Career
