The Johns Hopkins University Business Plan Competition is an annual event started in the 1998 - 1999 academic year by the W. P. Carey Program in Entrepreneurship and Management (now part of the Center for Leadership Education), When the event started, only undergraduate students at the Homewood campus were given the opportunity to compete. Now the competition is open to all full-time students including post-docs from any of the nine academic divisions of the university. The experience is an exciting opportunity for students of a variety of academic backgrounds. We have had participates from most of our academic divisions including: Bloomberg School of Public Health, Carey Business School, Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, School of Medicine, and Whiting School of Engineering. The competition takes place at the Homewood campus with judges and students traveling from Washington DC and local campuses.
Many ideas have moved on to become real businesses, and for many students the competition has provided a platform to learn how to develop a business and how to professionally present business ideas.
The goals of the competition include:
1) To provide an educational platform for students to organize and present their ideas in a business setting.

2) To encourage students to apply their ideas, concepts, and products to develop enterprises and career opportunities.

3) To continue create a stronger connection between Johns Hopkins and the business community.

Participants in the Johns Hopkins University Business Plan Competition also go on to other competitions around the country and the world. They have had great success placing in different competitions and moving on to create their own business. Also, students who have entered the competition have gotten placed into jobs when they graduate due to their strong conceptual ideas and/or their business skills.
