About
What is Beta Beta Beta?
Beta Beta Beta - abbreviated as BBB, and more colloquially known as Tri-Beta - is a national honor society for students dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study and extending boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research, particularly for undergraduate students. Since its inception, more than 175,000 persons have been inducted into lifetime membership; more than 430 chapters have been established throughout the United States and in Puerto Rico.
The motto of BBB is (in Greek) "Belepein basin biou," which means "to see the foundation of life."
BBB History
In 1922, a group of students at Oklahoma City University met with Dr. Frank G. Brooks to form what became the Alpha Chapter of a new honor society for Biology students. The idea of such a society spread very quickly; by 1925 the society had become a national organization, marked by the holding of the first biennial national convention of the organization.
As the society continued to grow, it became divided into regional and district groups, each of which holds an annual convention. BIOS, the official journal of the society, began publication of student research, relevant articles, and society news in 1930.
JHU BBB
The JHU chapter of BBB is the Rho Phi chapter of the organization. It was established in 2000.
