The Pep Band after the 2007 Lacrosse finals.
The Pep Band has the distinction of being the oldest of the Bands. Created
in 1921 the Pep Band has played at every Hopkins lacrosse and football (home
AND away) game since. From the school song, “Johnny Hopkins on to Victory”,
and “The Star Spangled Banner,” to the regular crowd pleasers,
the Pep Band is a vital part of any varsity football or lacrosse game. It
has been a long standing tradition to play “To Win” after every
touchdown, extra point and field goal in football, and after every goal in
lacrosse, following “To Win,” for the bass drum player to pound
out the score after each goal while the crowd counts, finally yelling "We
want more!" As the heirs to 85 years of Johns Hopkins Band traditions,
the pep band, sporting blue polos and khakis, travels all over the northeast,
and in the past as far as UNC and Ohio State. Also non-audition, we are directed
by Jari Villanueva, and rehearse from 8:30 to 9:30pm Sunday evenings in the SDS
Room, Mattin Center, right after the Wind Ensemble rehearsal. Whether we are
spreading holiday cheer in the MSEL during finals, parading around during
Halloween, waiting for the Banana signal, or singing (in falsetto) "The
Lion Sleeps Tonight" during a torrential downpour on Long Island (long
story) we remain strong and steadfast in our dedication to spread Merriment
and Mayhem, and are always looking to recruit. Just remember that WE WANT
MORE!!
Some more recent highlights include the NCAA Lacrosse Tournaments held in
Baltimore during the 2003 and 2004 seasons, and following the Hopkins Mens
Lacrosse team to the National Championship in Philadelphia in 2005!
We are also looking forward to following the Hopkins Football team to its
first ever NCAA playoff bid in November 2005!
