Brief Background of the Company
- The ballet company was founded at the end of the Fall 2007 semester.
- We're a student-run dance group, and we're the only dance group at the Homewood campus that's solely dedicated to ballet.
- The goal of the ballet company is to build a community centered around dance; no auditions are required to join the ballet company.
Dance Showcases
- We held our first annual spring dance showcase, "COLLIDE!", on April 2, 2009; it was a joint showcase with Jaywalk.
- Admission is free to all students, but freshmen will be seated first.
- We'll hold our first annual winter dance showcase on December 8, 2009. (It will be the day after the last day of classes for the Fall 2009 semester.) This will be our very own showcase; choreography sheets have been sent to the listserv. New and returning members who want to choreograph one or more pieces for the winter showcase are asked to complete a choreography sheet for each piece and e-mail it to ballet@jhu.edu no later than 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, October 3.
- Our second annual spring dance showcase will be at a TBD date in the Spring 2010 semester; it looks like we'll co-host it with the Eclectics Dance Group.
Active Membership
- According to the current version of the ballet company's constitution, active membership requires attendance at one ballet class each week.
- Active membership is required if members want to vote in company-related matters.
- Active membership is required if members want to perform with the ballet company.
- Active members who end up performing must attend all the rehearsals for all the pieces in which he or she is scheduled to perform.
- While it's not currently written in the constitution, we also ask that all active members who are of at least an intermediate ballet level teach at least one ballet class (beginner or intermediate/advanced) each semester.
Fundraiser
- We'll hold a fruit smoothie fundraiser at the Breezeway from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30.
- Members are encouraged to sign up for at least one selling shift and to contribute to the supplies necessary for this fundraiser to be a success!
T-shirts
- We're looking into having new ballet company t-shirts that are black, short-sleeved, and with pink writing on the front and back.
- We may also look into creating ballet company hoodies.
- If you have design ideas, please contact Melissa Nastacio at mnastac1@jhu.edu.
