Athletic Training Staff
Brad Mountcastle heads up the Certified Athletic Training Staff
in the Johns Hopkins University Athletic Training Room. Brad is assisted
by Associate Athletic Trainer, Matthew Bussman and Assistant Athletic Trainer,
Benjamin Diffenderfer. The staff is completed by three Graduate Assistant
Athletic Trainers; Susan Giesemann, Abbey Petrecca and Erin Stanton.
Together, the athletic training room staff is responsible for the treatment and
coordination of all health-related conditions that affect the collegiate
athletics participation of the Johns Hopkins University varsity
athletes. The varsity athletes are comprised of more than 700 JHU
undergraduate students representing 26 varsity sports. Each staff athletic
trainer is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association and is independently certified by the NATA Board of Certification. Athletic
Trainers specialize in injury and illness prevention, assessment, treatment and
rehabilitation for all physically active people, including the general
public. All certified or licensed athletic trainers must have a bachelor's
or master's degree from an athletic training accredited college or university. Degrees are
complementary to accredited athletic training majors and include established
academic curricula. Athletic trainers' bachelor's degrees are in
pre-medical sciences, kinesiology, exercise physiology, biology, exercise
science or physical education. Each JHU full-time staff athletic trainer
owns a graduate degree and participates in year-round continuing education in
order to maintain certification and utilize the most current and advanced
athletic training methods for the continued health and athletic achievement of
the Johns Hopkins athletes.
