Team Physician Staff
The Johns Hopkins Athletic Training Room
utilizes several allied health care professionals in the surrounding community
to assist in the overall health care of the Johns Hopkins University varsity
athletes. These medical professionals are chosen for their excellence in
their practice and commitment to the health and performance the varsity
athletes. The Team Physician Staff regularly assists in the evaluation and
treatment of Blue Jay athletes. All specialize in sports medicine and have
associations with professional athletes and franchises in the area. The
team is coordinated by Dr. Andrew Cosgarea, Director of the Division of Sports
Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at Johns Hopkins.
Associate Team Physicians include Dr. Hugh Baugher, Dr. Sean Curtin, Dr. Gregory
Guyton, Dr. Les Matthews, Dr. Edward McFarland, and Dr. Bashir Zikria. All
of our physicians are available for weekly clinical visits in the athletic training room
as well as office referrals for the JHU varsity athletes.
Head Team Physician
Andrew
Cosgarea, MD
Dr.
Cosgarea is the Head Team Physician for the Johns Hopkins University
Athletic Department. He is also the Director of the Division of
Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery and Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins. Dr.
Cosgarea completed medical school at Jefferson Medial College in
Philadelphia, PA. After his residency at the University of
Rochester, he joined Johns Hopkins University for his sports
medicine fellowship. Dr. Cosgarea specializes in the surgical
and non-surgical treatment of problems in active individuals with an
emphasis on knee, shoulder, ankle, elbow and other sports medicine
injuries.
Associate Team Physicians
Hugh
Baugher, MD
Dr.
Baugher sees patients at The Curtis National Hand Center at Union
Memorial Hospital and in the Union Memorial Sports Medicine
Lutherville office. Dr. Baugher earned his medical degree at
the University of Virginia Medical School. He trained in orthopaedic
surgery at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He completed
his Fellowship in Sports Medicine at The Hospital for Special
Surgery at Cornell University Medical College and his fellowship in
Hand Surgery at Cabrini Medical/NYU Center. Dr. Baugher is a
board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeon and holds a Certificate of Added
Qualifications in Hand Surgery. Dr Baugher specializes in the
shoulder, hand, wrist, knee, sports medicine and arthroscopy.
Sean
Curtin, MD

Dr. Curtin is an Internal Medicine/Sports Medicine specialist
practicing out the Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Bel Air, MD.
Dr. Curtin completed his medical degree at the University of Maryland School of
Medicine. He also completed his residency and fellowship with the University of
Maryland Medical Systems. Dr. Curtin specializes in internal medicine but also
handles back disorders because of his experiences during his fellowship.
Gregory Guyton, MD
Dr.
Guyton is an Orthopaedic Surgeon with Greater Chesapeake Orthopaedic
Associates, LLC at Union Memorial Hospital. Dr. Guyton received
his undergraduate degree in Physics from Vanderbilt
University and graduated from Harvard Medical School in Boston,
MA. Dr. Guyton specializes in foot and ankle injuries and
conditions and routinely assists in the care of lower-leg medical
injuries and conditions the Johns Hopkins varsity
athletes.
Les
Matthews, MD
Leslie
S. Matthews, M.D., is the Chief of Orthopaedics at Union Memorial
Hospital and the President of Greater Chesapeake Orthopaedic
Associates, LLC.
A graduate of The Johns Hopkins University and Baylor College of
Medicine, Dr. Matthews completed his residencies in general surgery
and orthopaedic surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital and his sports
medicine fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is board
certified and specializes in reconstructive knee and shoulder
surgery and sports medicine. Dr Matthews was also an All-American
Lacrosse Goalie at Johns Hopkins.
Edward
McFarland, MD
Dr. McFarland is
the Director of Adult Orthopedics and an Associate Professor for Orthopedics for Johns Hopkins. Dr. McFarland
attended medical school at the University of Louisville School of
Medicine and completed his residency at the Mayo Graduate School of
Medicine in Rochester, MN. Dr. McFarland is board certified by
the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and specializes in
shoulder and elbow conditions, athletic injuries to the shoulder and
elbow, and shoulder joint replacement surgery.
Bashir Zikria, MD

Dr. Zikria is graduate of the Medical College of Pennsylvania with
post-graduate work in biochemistry at Drexel University. He is a board-certified
orthopedic surgeon as well as Assistant Professor for Johns Hopkins Orthopedics.
Dr. Zikria completed his residency at Lennox Hill Hospital in New York. He then
completed his fellowship at the University of Miami with a focus in sports
medicine.
