A Few Words From Our President |
 |
Hello and welcome to the Johns Hopkins
University African Students Association website! We are very excited to enlighten and empower our African community on campus, in the community of Baltimore, and at neighboring colleges/universities. The JHU ASA comes to serve you, as we are a group on the Hopkins campus that gains increase in exposure every year! Not only do we educate, but hope to also entertain, promote, and create awareness to the issues and topics that surrounds our Motherland. My promise to you as a president is to fulfill and continue these well-wishes this year for our ASA. Aside from events thrown on campus, we hope to engage students on campus to participate and help with volunteering for certain organizations that affect the continent as we also promote community service with people in the African community. Several fundraising campaigns will also take place throughout the year towards a cause directed at Africa and the diaspora.
This year, one of our goals is also to promote outreach as we show a union among ASA's within the area as well as increasing the influence that we have here on the Hopkins campus. Everyone is welcome! You don't have to be African just to attend meetings, help out with certain events or service activities. At the end of the day, we are all ONE, and as long as people feel welcome when participating in our ASA, we have done our job! So without further adieu, WELCOME to our ASA as you are enlightened about the beautiful African continent we call 'Mama Africa'.
Sincerely,
Evalina C Ikpoh
President, 2011-2012

What is the ASA?
ASA? What
does that stand for? Are there cars in Africa? Do you live in trees
or huts? Many have been asked these and other such ridiculous questions.
Initial reaction may be to take offense. But, when it is taken into
consideration that many of these questions are meant not to offend,
but of genuine curiosity, the reaction should be to educate. The African
Students Association (ASA) of the Johns Hopkins University comprises
a group of students of African and non-African decent dedicated to the
education of the Hopkins community at large of the different cultures
that comprise the African continent. ASA also provides a network of
support for African students at Johns Hopkins. The African Students
Association is a service as well as social organization which aims to
rid misconceptions concerning Africa through education.
