Constitution


Article I. Name

The name of our organization shall be the African Students Association

Article II. Purpose
To educate the Hopkins community at large of the different cultures which comprise the African continent.

Article III. Membership

Article IV. Officers
The elected positions shall be:
President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Fundraising Chairperson, Membership/Events, Webmaster, and Freshman Representative

The appointed positions shall be Research and Education and OMSA Representative/Diversity Chairperson.

Article V. Duties of officers
President:
• Shall preside over all meetings
• Shall serve as the representative of ASA
• Shall vote only in the event of a tie
• Shall attend all SAC meetings along with the Treasurer

Vice President:
• Shall act in place of the President
• Shall ensure a smooth working executive board and seek to resolve all conflicts
• Shall reserve all rooms

Secretary
• Shall keep accurate records of the minutes of the executive and
general body meetings and distribute them to the executive board in a timely manner
• Shall maintain the email account and send out all information via email
• Shall assist the Research and Education chairperson in all duties

Treasurer
• Shall prepare an annual budget
• Shall keep track of all expenditures
• Shall attend all SAC meetings along with the President
• Shall work closely with the Membership/Events Chairperson

Research and Education
• Present current events at each meeting and keep us informed on the happenings in Africa
• Implement an African Awareness week during the month of February and work closely with the BSU Black History Month Chair.
• Implement projects to educate the Hopkins community on the happenings of Africa

Membership/Events
• Plan all events along with the executive board
• Plan all tactics to recruit active membership

Fundraising Chairperson
• Plan two fundraising events (one per semester)
• Maintain correspondence with treasurer
• Assist publicity chair in publicizing fundraising events

OMSA Representative/Diversity Chair
• Shall attend all OMSA meetings
• Act as main liaison between ASA and other JHU cultural groups and events

Webmaster
• Maintain the ASA website
• Work with the Events Chair to help advertise events via the website and flyers
• Work with the Secretary to post announcements and solicit help from the general body for ASA activities via the website
• Help with other activities as necessary
