Italian Studies
Major and Minor
The study of Italian focuses on a knowledge of the language itself,
which can then be followed by the study of Italian literature and culture.
Students study texts written during specific periods of time such as
the Italian Renaissance, genres such as short fiction and autobiography,
and themes including the effects of war and gender roles. Students of
Italian also perform in-depth study of significant authors such as Dante
and Machiavelli, and strive to understand the influence of Italian authors
on their country and the rest of the world.
Highlights of the Hopkins Program
Small classes offer the ideal environment for active participation and
discussion. The program’s flexibility encourages students
to combine studies in other programs, such as history, anthropology,
history of art, English, or film and media studies, with a major or
minor in Italian. The department emphasizes intense reading of individual
texts. Most courses beyond the level of basic language instruction
are devoted to literature. The department sponsors a variety of on-campus
activities, such as foreign films, lectures by visiting scholars, and
informal conversation groups.
