German and Spanish Placement

Welcome! Students who have taken German or Spanish before college and plan to continue at Hopkins must take the departmental placement exam, called Webcape, before registering. As it is offered year-round, please take it just before the semester you actually plan to study the language.

Note: Even students who have been awarded AP credit for German or Spanish must take the placement tests!

If you want to register for German or Spanish take the departmental placement test online. This multiple-choice test is individualized (self-adjusting to the student’s level) and is not timed. It covers grammar, vocabulary and reading skills. After taking the exam, contact Claudia Kavanagh (ckavanagh@jhu.edu) , or one of the Language Program Directors – German: Deborah Mifflin (mifflind@jhu.edu) or Spanish: Loreto Sanchez (lsanchez@jhu.edu) or Barry Weingarten (barry.weingarten@jhu.edu) to obtain permission to sign up for the course that matches your score. They in turn will notify the Registrar’s Office where your record will be adjusted to permit enrollment.

YOU MAY TAKE THE TEST ON-LINE ONLY ONCE.

Please note:
No waiver will be allowed based on the online score, you must take the exam during Orientation to receive a waiver. The exams are offered at the Language Laboratory (Krieger 506) on a rolling basis (no need to make an appointment):

Questions regarding the test or your score should be sent to Deborah Mifflin for German and Barry Weingarten for Spanish.
