Upper Quad (Keyser Quadrangle)

Upper Quad is bounded by the Eisenhower Library and Gilman Hall at its ends and Ames, Krieger (Rowland), Mergenthaler, and Remsen halls around its sides.

In 1954, the Upper Quad was named for William Keyser (trustee 1867-76), a one-time president of the Baltimore Copper Co., who was the moving force behind the donation of the Homewood property to Hopkins. In 1901, he bought 62 acres of land, most of them from his cousin, Elizabeth Aldrich, William Wyman's sister, and donated them to the University in 1902. At the same time he organized the donation of three additional tracts of land, totaling 71 acres, by Samuel Keyser, Francis M. Jencks, William H. Buckler, and Julian LeRoy White. These donations, combined with the donation of William Wyman (see Lower Quad - Wyman Quadrangle) formed the original Homewood Campus.
