Hodson Hall
Hodson Hall opened for the fall semester of 2002,
west of Garland Hall and north of Clark Hall on
the west side of the Homewood campus. The three-story,
48,000-square foot building contains state-of-the-art
classrooms and lecture halls, an auditorium, meeting
space for the university's board of trustees, and the
archives of the Hodson Trust and the Beneficial Corp.
The Hodson Trust, which committed $13 million to
construction
of the building, was created in 1920 by the family of
Beneficial
Corp.'s founder, Colonel Clarence Hodson. It supports
excellence
in higher education by providing grants for scholarships,
capital
improvements, research and other purposes to four Maryland
schools:
Johns Hopkins, Washington College, Hood College and St.
John's College.
Under the stewardship for the past 28 years of its current
chairman,
Finn M.W. Caspersen, the trust's total donations to the
four
institutions have grown from $12.6 million to more than
$118 million.
You can read about the construction of Hodson Hall in this December 17, 2001 Gazette article.
