Charles Commons
Charles Commons is a residential, dining and retail complex in Charles Village, on 33rd Street between North Charles and St. Paul streets. Opened in 2006, the complex provides suite-style housing for 618 students in two towers connected by a bridge. A large dining facility is open to faculty, staff and neighbors during the day, but only to students in the evening. The residential space also includes a ballroom that can be subdivided for smaller events, an exercise facility for students, laundry rooms, music practice rooms, a game room, and lounges with views of the Charles Village neighborhood and the city. Also in the complex are a large campus bookstore, operated by
Barnes & Noble, and the Homewood branch of the
Johns Hopkins Federal Credit Union.
Charles Commons has been an important first step toward the university's goal of guaranteeing that Homewood juniors and seniors who want university housing can get it. It's also a part of the larger Charles Village Projects, a university-developer-neighborhood partnership enhancing life in Charles Village by providing new housing and retail options for residents and the campus community.
The 313,000 square foot, $78 million Charles Commons complex was designed by the Design Collective Inc. and Ayers/Saint/Gross.
